Curry curry curry

I don't know the length of the runway at Pakdee but that A321 looks a big airplane.

Airport Name: Surin, Airport Location: Surin, State Name: N/A, State Code: N/A, Country Name: Thailand, SubContinemt: South East Asia, Country Code: TH, ISO3: THA, IATA Code: N/A, City Code: N/A, FAA Code: N/A, ICAO Code: VTUJ, Facility Use: Public, Runway Surface: Paved-Asphalt-Concrete, Runway Length: 5000 Feet, Runway Elevation: 478 Feet, Latitude; 14°52'09.40"N (14.8692777777778), Longitude: 03°29'20.00"E (103.488888888889)

A321 take off distance at MTOW (Maximum Take Off Weight) at sea level = 2,560 m (8,400 ft).

Ooooops! Rather you than me Gunga Din - I think I stick with NCA for my runs to Bangkok.

Going by this I would say somebody has a very big problem as there is only about 1450 meters that can be used.

1450 meters = 4757 feet. A321 needs 8,400 feet with full load. Only redeeming factor is that the A321 is a long-haul aircraft and will not need full fuel load for a 30 minute trip to BKK. Standard maximum fuel load for 4,000 nm is 24,050 litres. JET A1 AVTUR weighs .8 kg therefore full fuel load some 19,240 kg. Maybe they will save at least 10,000 kgs by flying with less fuel and need shorter take off distance. Without detailed Pilot's Notes I have no way of determining V1, V2 or length of runway required. However, I suspect the take off run will still exceed the length of the runway available at Surin.

Someone else can find out the hard way . . . not me!

The new airline is for brave souls, because of the short runways that they use, so the frequent flier program will be known as "The Souls club".
Therefore you will, or become an R Soul if not one already.

No way they'd be using that for Surin. I figure if this true and they are coming to Surin they will lease something much smaller. I have heard rumors they are extending the runway. Have to go down there one day and see what is going on.

Would be interesting to see the numbers of those going to Satuk from Surin for flights to Bangkok. The small flights of earlier times were about 3/4 full when I used them. Don't know why one of these airlines don't do an Isaan circuit of a couple more cities when coming up here or going to Bangkok.Landing fees possibly.

I couldn't even hazard a guess at what landing fees are these days. 45 years ago the fee for an 8 seater landing at Leeds was 25 quid. Nomad is likely to know (or be able to find out).

Ah! You know how to ask the impossible. Couldn't find too much other than an example of the calculation of the landing charge for B747-4D7 with maximum take-off weight of 386 metric tons from the airports of Samui, Trat and Sukhothai. For an International flight this would be some 64,000 Baht while domestic flights attract a 50% discount, .i.e. some 32,000 Baht. There is a sliding scale of charges determined by gross weight, international or domestic and separate parking fees based on duration of stay. Given that the A321 has a gross take-off weight of 93,000 kg, approximately 75% less than the 747 in the example above, then an extrapolation of the landing fees applied above would indicate a charge in the region of 8,000 Baht. QED!

If I am not mistaken that very aircraft buzzed overhead three times between 10h50 and 11h00 this morning. I was doing my lengths in the pool right next to the airport.
I couldn't be sure it had landed but GL's photo suggests it did.

What has all of this to do with Curry?

When you fly on one of those and land during a thunderstorm's turbulence and downdrafts...you'll discover curry in your pants as you depart the aircraft.
