Driver killed in molasses truck overturn

BURI RAM: The driver of an 18-wheel truck was killed after the vehicle, loaded with about 30 tonnes of molasses, overturned in Khaen Dong district on Sunday morning, police said.

Pol Lt Col Prayoon Ritta, a Khaen Dong police investigator, said the truck skidded off the Khu Muang-Khaen Dong road near Ban Yang Noi in tambon Sa Bua and overturned.

The truck, loaded with about 30 tonnes of malasses, was on the way from Nong Bua Lamphu province to a liquor factory in Satuk district in Buri Ram. The accident took place about 10 kilometres from the factory.

Thong-in Prasopsri, the truck driver, was killed. Rescuers from the Buri Ram-based Sawanchanya Thammasatharn Foundation took about 30 minutes to extract his body from the badly-damaged vehicle.

The molasses flowed out of the vehicle into nearby ricefields.

Police were investigating the cause of the accident.

My maths never were that good, but try as I might I can't count more than 10 wheels on the reported 18 wheeler? In the UK it would be classed as a 6 wheeler, or 6 legger.

Look
Look again that is the cab unit can tell by the undercarriage. If there is a trailer unit it is not shown.

Is that what you Americans call the Prime mover. The cab unit? Never heard that used in any American TV show/movie.

Correct - you can see an exhaust assembly and what appears to be the driver's open door ahead of the centre axle. Only 4 wheels on a trailer, seems unlikely?

Looks like only the tractor unit to me. With 30 tonnes on board plus the container, he definitely should have been articulated with at least two double twin wheeled axles on the back.

Definately the tractor unit, and unlikely he was towing a trailer, as no evidence of a draw hitch on the rear cross member of the chassis. Perhaps the payload was exaggerated along with the number of wheels?

The Thai media is over the top using western terminology to make themselves sound and look like they know english. The phrases 18 wheeler is what we in the colonies commonly call our road units because they do have 18 wheels sooooooo these morons FORK UP AGAIN and make themselves look like idiots. That truck is a sold 10 wheeler no if, ands or buts.:D

This is the a unit similar to what is in the media photo and yes it would be hauling 30 tonnes of molasses.
